Billerud to take part in 11th year of ‘Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day’
Billerud is proud to participate in Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day, a day where companies open their doors so thousands of young girls get hands-on experience and insights into the engineering profession.
Billerud is participating for the 11th consecutive year and welcoming future engineers at five locations in Sweden and four locations in the United States.
IGEday is a collaboration between Billerud and Womengineer to increase interest in technology among young girls.
“For Billerud to continue to be successful, it is important to attract, recruit and retain a diversified workforce,” said Paulina Ekvall, EVP HR and Communications for Billerud. “The engineering profession has been traditionally male dominated, and we are committed to change that. Our industry cannot afford to miss out on talented people who could become a new generation of engineers due to outdated perceptions of the profession. Through our involvement in IGEday, around 700 young girls have had the opportunity to meet and be inspired by our engineers in Billerud.”
Billerud’s commitment to diversity extends beyond IGEday, with a strong focus on increasing the proportion of female employees and managers within the company. Encouraging more young people to pursue technical education and careers is a key part of this strategy.
This year, Billerud is organizing IGEday in Sweden on March 28 at its operations in Frovi, Gavle, Karlsborg, Skarblacka and Solna. On April 10, IGEday will take place in the United States at the company’s operations in Escanaba and Quinnesec, plus Miamisburg, Ohio; and Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin.
Womengineer is a foundation that works toward the goal of having as many female engineers as male engineers by 2030. They aim to inform and inspire girls and non-binary people about the engineering profession so everyone can make a well-informed decision about their future and reach their full potential. IGEday gives girls and non-binary individuals ages 13 to 19 the opportunity to experience life as an engineer.
