IRON RIVER — Aspirus Iron River can now provide lung cancer screenings, which have proven to be effective in detecting the disease at its earliest and most treatable stages.

Lung cancer remains among the most prevalent and deadly forms of cancer worldwide, Aspirus stated in a news release.

According to the World Health Organization, it is the leading cause of cancer deaths globally. The reality is that lung cancer often goes undetected until it reaches advanced stages, significantly reducing the chances of successful treatment and survival.

“I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of lung cancer screenings,” said Don Dumke, supervisor of Imaging Services at Aspirus Health. “By utilizing advanced imaging technology, we have the power to detect abnormalities in the lungs at their earliest stages, often before symptoms manifest.”

Lung cancer screenings involve the use of low-dose computed tomography, or CT, scans to detect cancerous growths or abnormalities in the lungs.

While lung cancer screenings are beneficial, they are typically recommended for individuals who are at a higher risk of developing the disease. Criteria for screening includes:

— Age 50-77 years.

— Current or former smoker (quit in the past 15 years).

— 20 pack-year history of smoking (packs per day x years smoked = pack years).

— Asymptomatic (no signs or symptoms of lung cancer, such as coughing blood).

— Have existing health conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease — COPD — or a family history of lung cancer.

“The primary goal of lung cancer screenings is to detect the disease at its earliest stages when treatment options are most effective,” said Dr. John Pietila, radiologist at Aspirus Health. “Early detection through screening can improve survival rates among individuals diagnosed with lung cancer.”

Early detection can also reduce the need for aggressive and invasive treatment procedures such as surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy. Instead, patients may have access to less invasive interventions, including targeted therapies, which can effectively target cancer cells.

“By providing these screenings locally, we’re not just detecting cancer earlier, we are also bringing advanced medical technologies to rural communities,” said Rae Kaare, chief administrative officer for Aspirus Iron River Hospital and Clinics.
