Golden K member tells story

Golden K member Brett Calcari, son of longtime members Al and Laverne Calcari, shared his story with fellow members at Monday’s meeting.
KINGSFORD — Snow flurries continue to fall, along with the blowing, blustery winds. Although the first day of spring was two weeks ago, it’s not in the air. Golden K hasn’t met for two weeks due to inclement weather, but members arrived “bundled up” and greeted each other warmly on Monday.
Brett Calcari took his place at the podium as the day’s chairperson. Next, Lois Outcelt took charge to lead the singing as Alyce Derwinski moved to her position at the piano. “Sentimental Journey,” “Shine on Harvest Moon” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag” were chosen and familiar to all.
A faithful member, Ben Determan, recently passed away and “Auld Lang Syne” was sung in his memory.
“Happy Birthday” was sung for Lorraine Jacobs, Joan Jouppi and Mary Swope and the “Welcome Song” greeted Kathy Arnold from Dickinson Iron Community Services Agency.
Brett Calcari took the opportunity to tell a bit about himself. He is the son of long-time members Al and Laverne Calcari but didn’t grow up in this area. Al’s job moved the family to Waukegan, Ill., and he spent most of his life there. He attended college, married, had two children and a 35-year career in IT — Information Technology. He now has three grandchildren and his family remains in Illinois.
Growing up, visits to the U.P. were frequent to the Calcari family farm in Upper Pine Creek, where his father was raised. The property has been in the Calcari family for 100 years.
After retirement, Calcari moved to Upper Pine Creek and loves working on the land. He says that every day is a vacation, as he rises early each morning to see the sunrise.
Calcari found that connecting with people at this age is not always easy when you relocate. He notes that the Golden K has filled this void for him and he treasures the friendships he has created here.
The Golden K has enjoyed getting to know Brett and appreciates his contributions to the club.
Golden K meets at 10 a.m. every Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford.
Everyone is welcome to attend a meeting and share a cup of coffee and a donut without obligation.
