UP children’s author to speak at the Dickinson County Library Thursday

LISA DORVINEN

IRON MOUNTAIN — Upper Peninsula children’s author Lisa Dorvinen will be at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain to promote her children’s book “My Whale of a Tale” from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday.

This program for kids through age 8 and their caregivers includes a reading of “My Whale of a Tale,” which follows Harrison, a young boy with a vivid imagination.

Young readers will delight in the colorful illustrations of this lyrical story as they experience Harrison’s joy. There will also be a craft and a thematic photo opportunity.

“An author visit can kindle a love of reading in children by showing them the person behind the characters and setting of the story,” says Amanda Kivi, early literacy specialist at the Dickinson County Library.

With a focus on sparking creativity and instilling valuable life lessons, Dorvinen’s books are designed to engage young readers and foster their imagination. She draws inspiration from the innocence and wonder of childhood, crafting stories that leave a lasting impact on young hearts and minds.

Dorvinen was born and raised in the U.P. and spent her childhood exploring the beaches and spending time outdoors with family. Her love for her family and reading to her children, nieces, and nephews prepared her to create engaging and entertaining stories fit for little ones.

When she is not writing, she enjoys traveling, attending local sporting events and spending time with her family and friends. She returned to her hometown and lives in Lake Linden, with her husband and two adventurous beloved dogs, Miss Lydia and Miss Violet.
