This week’s Back to the Present, provided by the Menominee Range Historical Museum of Iron Mountain, is a 1940 view of the Quinnesec Junior High School on Lincoln Avenue in Quinnesec.
The two-story, brick Quinnesec Junior High School was built on a 5-acre site in 1925 at a cost of $170,055.
In its first year from 1925-1926, the school housed students from kindergarten through 11th grade that had transferred from the Garfield School, which only went through the 10th grade. During the 1926-1927 school year, the 12th grade was added, and Quinnesec’s first graduating class received their diplomas in May 1927.
At the end of the 1943-1944 school year, the high school was closed and students were transferred to Kingsford High School. Classes from kindergarten through eighth grade were held in Quinnesec until the end of the 1964-1965 school year.
The school remained open to house young students until 1989, when Breitung Township Schools built a new elementary school.

The building was then used by the Intermediate School District until shortly before it was razed in October 1996.
The large site is now home to the Quinnesec Park playground and soccer and baseball fields. During the winter months there is a skating rink with warming shack.
