Free food distribution Thursday in Norway

NORWAY — A free food distribution event is planned Thursday at the Crossroads Alliance church facility, 130 Odill Drive in Norway.

Traffic will be directed to park in the Covenant Church parking lot for registration and wait until distribution begins. Volunteers will conduct registration at each vehicle. Participants are asked to remain in their vehicle during the entire process to help insure the health and safety of everyone. The food distribution will start as soon as volunteers are ready but no later than 3 p.m.

Organizers note that the time listed on the Feeding America website is Eastern time. However, please be aware that due to the need to manage traffic flow and prevent any backup of vehicles to the highway in the event people arrive early, it could be possible that distribution may start earlier if everything is ready.

The distribution will be on a drive-through basis. Vehicles should line up in the parking lot in the Covenant Church at 120 Odill Drive and follow the directions of volunteers.

The distribution also needs volunteers who can come between 2 and 2:30 p.m. They ask that volunteers dress appropriately for the weather.

The church is also accepting brown paper grocery bags for the food pantry.

Food distributions are sponsored in part by a grant through the Dickinson County Community Foundation. Other sponsors include Bethany Lutheran, Evangelical Covenant, Grace Methodist, St. Mary and St. Barbara Catholic Church parishes, Community Bible Chapel in Norway and Faithorn United Methodist Church.

The Feeding America mobile food pantry comes to the area from the West Michigan Food Bank near Grand Rapids, Mich. It operates a network of food banks and is the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity.

Anyone who needs food assistance is welcome to come and receive produce and groceries that have been made available by donations and partnerships from people and corporations that share the goal of solving the problem of hunger in America.

The Crossroads Alliance facility is the home of Bethany Lutheran Church and Grace United Methodist Church.

For more information or to volunteer for the distribution, call Deb Vargo at Grace Methodist Church office at 906-563-8917.

Starting at $2.99/week.
