Back to the Present

(Albert Quade photo) The Daily News is bringing back photos of “yesteryears.” Each week, an historical photograph will be posted on The Daily News’ Facebook page. Readers will be asked to identify the location, as well as share a memorable experience of the location. “Back to the Present” will then be published in the Wednesday edition, including a current photo. Readers can comment on The Daily News’ Facebook page, or email tcastelaz@ironmountaindailynews.com with subject “Back to the Present.”

This week’s Back to the Present, provided by the Menominee Range Historical Museum, is a 1913 view of First National Bank on the east side of the 200 block of S. Stephenson Ave. in Iron Mountain.

First National Bank was organized in 1887 with the first bank president, John R. Wood, purchasing the entire brick building, known as the Wood Block, for $22,000.

The store to the immediate right of the bank with the furled, light-colored awning was occupied by C.E. Anderson & Co., a general merchandise store at 202 E. Ludington Ave. There is also a barber pole behind the horse-drawn cart at the curb, advertising Axel Carlson’s barber shop.

Wood’s Sandstone Block on East Ludington Street included the Iron Mountain City Hall offices and the post office.

The bandstand at the northwest corner of S. Stephenson Avenue also served as the police station at the lower level. The bandstand was later moved to St. Paul Park, on the west side of the 600 block of S. Stephenson Ave. near the St. Paul Depot.

The First National Bank constructed its new facility in 1991 north of the original downtown bank building. The “Wood Block” was razed shortly after the new office opened.

Starting at $2.99/week.
