Back to the Present
This week’s Back to the Present, provided by the Harbour House Museum, highlights the history of 104 N. Third St. in Crystal Falls.
The Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad Co., known locally as the St. Paul or Milwaukee Road, started a railroad service to Crystal Falls and a depot was constructed in 1900 on the northwest corner of Crystal Avenue and North Third Street.
The railroad provided passenger and freight service in direct competition with the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. In later years, the two companies shared the lucrative iron ore hauling business from the local mines.
The passenger service discontinued in the late 1930s, with only freight and express service available until the depot closed on Jan. 19, 1962. The old structure was demolished in 1964.
The Alpha Crystal Falls Credit Union purchased the property and constructed a new $150,000 modern office facility, including a rental space occupied by local attorney Paul Schultz. The facility hosted a grand opening ceremony on July 30, 1978.
In 2001, Langenberg Funeral Homes Inc. purchased the property and remodeled the building into a funeral home.
Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Iron Mountain purchased the property and opened the Nash Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc. of Crystal Falls in October 2008.
Nash Funeral Home is still serving the community at that location.
