KINGSFORD — The furnaces are humming their sweet melodies, bringing warmth to our hearts as the air cools. The chill doesn’t keep Golden K members away on Monday morning. Everyone arrives with a warm smile on their face as they catch up with one another over coffee and doughnuts.

Kathy Jo Anderson rang the bell promptly to get the meeting underway. Alyce Derwinski slid onto the piano bench as she warmed up the keys. Lois Outcelt led the group in singing “Pretty Baby,” “Shine on Harvest Moon,” “Somebody Else is Taking My Place,” and “My Country ‘Tis of Thee.”

Happy Birthday was sung for Larry Lindholm, Sandy Soltis and Sharon Neubauer. The guest song rang out for Shari Wery and Cynthia Fuller.

Thought for the day was a quote by Mark Twain: “Good decisions come from experience. Experience comes from bad decisions.”

Pot of Gold winnings went to Sarah Gospodarek. Gary Proudfit read the Happy Dollar messages. Kathy Jo Anderson was happy to have Shari Wery as the speaker. Brett Calcari is happy to be returning to Illinois to visit kids, grandkids and his parents, Al and Laverne Calcari, who are celebrating 70 years of marriage.

Shari Wery, director of the Walk of Life Pregnancy Services, was introduced by Chairperson Kathy Jo Anderson. Walk of Life is a pregnancy care center that is designed to help women regardless of race, religion, age, income or marital status.

They offer pregnancy tests, support and consultation for women with unexpected pregnancies. Advocates do not make decisions or place judgment on the decisions made by their clients. They offer options available to the women. Their services are free and confidential.

Mothers and their support person may choose to participate in individual lessons to learn about their pregnancy and their baby while earning “mommy money” to purchase items from their store, including maternity clothes, baby clothing, high chairs, bouncy seats, pack-n-plays, diapers, wipes and more.

Lessons include prenatal care/development, infant care, safety and first aid, parenting, life skills and relationships.

Those who are pregnant or think they might be pregnant who are scared and unsure what to do can contact the office at 906-774-5683. They are at 1018 Cedar Ave. in Iron Mountain.

Anyone interested in volunteering at the center is encouraged to call.

Next week’s program will be Trooper Geno Basanese of the Michigan State Police. Golden K meets at 10 a.m. Mondays at the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford. All are welcome.

Starting at $2.99/week.
