IRON MOUNTAIN — The Dickinson County Library is hosting “The Art of Being,” a program for cancer warriors, survivors, and caregivers to come together from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday in Iron Mountain.

“The Art of Being” program is a drop-in program for patrons who are battling cancer, are survivors of cancer and for those who are/have been caregivers , such as family, friends, medical personnel, etc.

This program was created by Emily Cummings, young adult/adult programming and local history specialist at the Dickinson County Library, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in March.

“I started the program because there weren’t any cancer relief groups in our area. As a current cancer patient myself, I know how important it is to have a support system in place to help get through the physical and mental toll it takes on a person,” Cummings said.

“Having also observed what caretakers experience as they watch loved ones fight and endure so much, the toll on them is great as well,” Cummings said. “I wanted to create a safe space where fighters, survivors, and caretakers can be with those going through/having gone through the many stages of cancer. I wanted a space where people can ask questions, share their journey and feel normal for a few hours.”

This program will be a safe space to share experiences and meet others who are going through or have gone through cancer.

Each month a craft will be available for attendees to do if they wish; February’s craft will be hanging heart hugs.

Future meetings include 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 16, at the Iron Mountain library and 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, at the North Dickinson Branch in the North Dickinson County School in Felch Township.

The Dickinson County Library helps the community find its story. Founded in 1967, the library has three locations in Dickinson County — the main site in Iron Mountain, the Solomonson Branch in Norway and the North Dickinson Branch in Felch Township.
