St. Urho’s Day event enjoyed by Finns and friends

Tim and Betty Airaudi, were the lucky names drawn to be St. Urho and his “Queen of the Vineyard” for the day at the annual St. Urho’s Day festival.
IRON MOUNTAIN — Members and friends of the Iron Mountain area Raja Ryhma Finnish American organization hosted its annual St. Urho’s Day festivities on Saturday at the Recreation Lanes’ Antoine Room.
The colors of royal purple and green dominated the scene and some of the 31 guests wore pins with the image of St. Urho.
Before the buffet meal, served by Zollner’s Catering, Raja Ryhma member Karen Wertanen shared information about the legend of this mythical hero, which originated in the mind of Finnish-American Richard Mattson, from Virginia, Minn., almost 70 years ago.
St. Urho definitely is to be celebrated for his feat of saving Finland’s grape crop from ravenous grasshoppers. That supposedly happened on March 16, the day before St. Patrick’s Day.
After those present shared a toast of grape juice in St. Urho’s honor, the meal was ready and a prayer of thanks was offered in the Finnish language and a translation.
This year, two new guests, Tim and Betty Airaudi, were the lucky names drawn to be St. Urho and his “Queen of the Vineyard” for the day. They energetically led the grand march, which was an original version written and played by Paula D.
The lighthearted celebration of St. Urho continued with great conversation, a few prizes and Paula D’s enjoyable music.
Planning is underway for the annual Juhannus midsummer celebration, which is scheduled for Saturday, June 21, at the City Park in Iron Mountain. Everyone is encouraged to mark the date on the calendar and watch for more details.
Remember, you don’t have to be a Finn to join in the fun; just enjoy being with Finns.
