DC Library February events slated
IRON MOUNTAIN –The Dickinson County Library and branches have events planned for February. They include:
— Mahjong Monday: from 1 to 3 p.m. every Monday in February at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Beginner and expert adults will play Mahjong, a tile-based game developed in 19th century China. Those new to the game can learn from our instructor, and seasoned players can play the game with one another. Participants are welcome to bring their own tiles, but it’s not necessary. Registration is required, call the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain at 906-774-1218. Space is limited.
— Five Senses Storytime Sessions: from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Tuesdays, Feb. 11 and 25 at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain; Friday, Feb. 7 and 28 at the North Dickinson Branch; and Friday, Feb. 14 at the Solomonson Branch.
Children through age five will explore the five senses through stories, songs, crafts, and activities that promote early literacy and create lifelong readers.
— Book Breakdowns: Amy Betters-Midtvedt: from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Amy Betters-Midtvedt just launched her first book titled “You’ll Make It (and they will too): Everything No One Talks About When You’re Parenting Teens.” With over a million followers on social media and known for her parenting wisdom, relatability and sense of humor, it is no wonder Amy, and her work are changing the lives of many parents and grandparents all over the nation. At this program for teens and adults, there will be a book giveaway, time for questions, a book signing, and cupcakes afterwards.
— Tween Reads Book Club: from 4 to 4:45 p.m. Monday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
This will be the first meeting of Tween Reads book club, for kids ages 8-12. They will be discussing “Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (The Graphic Novel)” by Rick Venditti. Reading the book beforehand is not necessary, but will help with their book club discussion. They will also play Greek Mythology bingo and decorate sugar cookies with the Greek God symbols associated with the Percy Jackson series.
— Lego Club: from 3:15 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the North Dickinson Branch.
The program for kids in grades kindergarten through eighth offers the opportunity to be creative while building with Legos. This month, build a top out of Legos, then compete with other participants to see whose top spins the longest.
— The February Dickinson County Library board meets at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain. The public is always welcome to attend board meetings.
— Write On! from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Adults and teens are invited to join the writer’s group that focuses on providing an encouraging and supportive space for all types of writers. This month, attendees will have a quiet space to work on current or new writing projects with opportunities to share ideas, tips, and feedback.
— Bow Wows and Books: from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Patrons of all ages and reading abilities can practice their reading skills aloud by reading to therapy dogs, Angel a teddy-bear, and Roz, a golden retriever. Registration is required; call 906-774-1218 to sign up. Space is limited.
— Galentine’s Workshop: from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Tweens, teens, and adults are invited for a special Galentine’s event with local artist Sarah Rice. Rice will lead participants in creating Valentine’s Terra Cotta pots. Registration is required; call 906-774-1218 to sign up. Space is limited.
— Little Senses Playgroup: from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Little Senses Playgroup is perfect for little hands to explore. They’ll have different stations designed to engage your child’s senses with fun activities like tactile bins, sensory bottles, fine motor activities and early literacy activities. This is a special time for young children to discover and play at their own pace, though we do ask that an adult stays to supervise. While this event is ideal for ages 1-3, older siblings are welcome too.
— The Graveyard Shift: from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17 at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
The book club is perfect for teens and adults that love to read true crime, horror, and/or books with supernatural elements. This month, discuss Michigan true crime story “Bath Massacre” by Arnie Bernstein. Discussion packets are available at the library in Iron Mountain.
— Solomonson Branch — Book Club: 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20 from at the Solomonson Branch.
Adults are invited to discuss this month’s book club selection, “Wandering Stars” by Tommy Orange. New members are always welcome.
— Glass Painting: from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25 at the North Dickinson Branch
Adults will use acrylic paint pens to create designs on a wine glass. Registration is required and begins on Tuesday, Feb. 18; call 906-542-7230. Space is limited.
— Gamers’ Club: from 3:15 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25 at the North Dickinson Branch.
Kids in grades third to eighth are invited to play a variety of video and board games at this monthly program.
