IRON MOUNTAIN - The fascination that people have with antiques, or more specifically, objects of their youth, is understandable. We all love a reminder from the "good old days," even when the item is a little nicked and battered. After all, that toy or book or chair is over 50 years old. Wait a minute. Does that mean that some of us are also a little nicked and battered? Could we, too, be described as "worn around the edges and showing some age?" Hmmm.
That thought occurred to me as I cleaned up an old desk that had been in my mother's basement for so long that I forgot it was there. My parents had purchased it around 1950 from a resale shop, which means that the desk is probably several years older than I am. Still, I couldn't help making a comparison, albeit strange, between the condition of that old desk and myself.
We have both survived several decades and had more experiences than showed on our exteriors. From a distance or at least in the dim light of the basement the wood desk looked pretty good (I prefer to be seen in candlelight, but one does have to go in the light of day, doesn't one?). My mother accommodated me with soap and a cloth with which I cleaned away the dirt from years of storage. Beneath the surface was a truer story. (Isn't that always the case?)
The desk had belonged to my father, whose familiar image seated there, with head bowed over papers, is still easily and vividly recalled. I can see the green desk blotter, the marble clock, the black "Records" book, and a brass letter holder. The desk remained with him through the years and moves to other homes. It's the only piece of my parents' furniture that still exists from my earliest childhood. I half-expected to find an old stamp or yellowed envelope or, better yet, one of my "Crayola creation" birthday cards inside a drawer. But, alas, those were gone. Even the papers from more recent business had been cleared away. Yet, it was not exactly "empty."
As I moved my hands across the desktop, I felt the familiarity that had endeared it to me. Touches of wood stain restored the color to the worn edges, and some polish highlighted the pretty tones of the mahogany. Even the brass handles, darkened with age, revealed their gold once again. And a crack in one foot could easily be fixed with glue, couldn't it? After all, a desk this old should have some flaws. That's what gives it character.
The desk is being given to my son, who will use it for many more years, I'm sure. He appreciates things that have some history, sentimentality, and character associated with them - things that are, I guess, a lot like his mother.
