With all the negativity being bombarded into articles concerning liberals that are written in letters to the newspaper, it aroused my curiosity of the word itself and its origins.
It just so happens that the word is a Latin word that was formed in approximately the year 1325 and originates from the word "liberalis."
The meaning of the word: "Befitting the free. Belonging to the people."
In other words, the correct meaning of the word liberal is freedom. If I am not mistaken, that is what America was founded on and was supposed to be our core value. The opposite would be servile; the meaning: "Befitting a slave."
