He then attended optometry school at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, Calif., graduating as a doctor of optometry in May 2014. He received numerous academic and clinical honors while attaining his doctorate of optometry degree.

While in optometry school, Dr. Baker was selected based on academic and clinical performance, to be the student clinical instructor of his class. In this position, he taught fellow classmates, underclassmen, local optometrists and ophthalmologists various clinical examination skills.

"There is a lot to be said, and learned by the statement, 'watch one, do one, teach one,'" he said. "If you can teach others it solidifies knowledge, and this is a direct translation into a warm patient-doctor experience; a vital aspect of today's health care."

Baker continued to impress his faculty members, colleagues, and community and was honored by receiving the prestigious Who's Who Among Students in Colleges and Universities award.

Baker's faculty members endorsed him with this award for his natural ability to demonstrate profound academic achievement, clinical skills, leadership, and service to the community and school.

"I realized the value of a strong work ethic at an early age and it continues to influence my professional career," he said.

His academic achievements continued as he gained recognition for scoring nationally in the top 10 and 15 percent on exams administered by the National Board of Optometry.

Currently, he remains an active optometry alumnus serving as a tutor/instructor for optometry and medical students, preparing them academically and clinically to pass the National Board of Optometry exams.

Baker says he was fortunate to be raised into the eye care profession.

"Having my father, Dr. Robert Baker, who has been a private practicing optometrist in Iron Mountain since 1975 and also at the Oscar G. Johnson Veterans Affairs Medical Center for the past 20 years, has unarguably been my inspiration to pursue optometry," he said.

Baker has been a volunteer at both his father's private office, Baker Eye Care, and at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center eye clinic since his high school years.

"From an early age, I saw how well patients respected my father and how rewarding it was helping people safeguard their most precious sense," he said.

"I immediately knew I wanted to follow in his footsteps. Having him as a mentor is everything I could ask for as a new optometrist. For over 40 years, my father has built an eye clinic from the ground up which has provided primary and advanced care encompassing the visual health systems," he said. "He has remained medically modern in his clinic, while continuing a strong doctor-patient relationship which has been lost in many modern practices. This is the exact type of clinic I want to practice in and I am excited to provide eye care at Baker Eye Care."

"My family, friends, and being able to support this great community are big reasons I returned to my hometown to practice," he said.

Baker serves as a mentor for local high school and college students, volunteers coaching local athletic teams, participates in Wildlife Unlimited activities and is a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Baker provides a complete spectrum of eye care services including prescription eye glasses, contact lenses, specialty contact lenses, pediatrics, "back to school" children eye exams, diagnosis and treatment of vision disorders, rehabilitative vision services associated with brain injury and stroke, and vision therapy.

Additional services include diagnosis and treatment of ocular diseases including cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, dry eye, and infections. Eye evaluations for "at risk" medical patients, are provided which includes those with diabetes, autoimmune disease, hypertension and other medical conditions.

Dr. Dane Baker practices full scope optometry at Baker Eye Care located at 1115 S. Hemlock St., in Iron Mountain.
