LAONA, Wis. -The Boundary Waters Musky Club, along with the Headwaters Chapter of Muskies Inc., sponsored a fishing outing recently for kids ages 10 to 17.
The event's headquarters was the Silver Lake pavilion in Laona, Wis.
The 47 young participants selected their method of fishing. Angling approaches varied from live bait to casting artificial lures, targeting panfish to muskies.
Lunch was served and prizes given for the largest fish in each category, plus all participating kids received multiple gifts.
Winners of each category were:
-27-inch musky, Alex Pehmoeller.
-24-inch northern pike, Tanner Piton.
-20-inch walleye, Zach McLaughlin.
-15- bass, Tyler Piton and Colton Cooper.
-10-inch crappie, Malina Lazzeroni and Alex Kuehn.
The young anglers were matched up with one of 23 guides, who donated their time, boat, tackle and bait. Fish were released to be caught another day.
"This was great way to introduce kids to various types of fishing and learn new angling skills," said Dan Lazzeroni, event chairman, "It certainly appeared that everyone had a great time and went home happy."
Lazzeroni thanked all those that helped make this a successful event.
The grand prize winner of a musky rod donated by Headwaters was Alex Pehmoeller with his 27-inch musky. Headwaters also donated rods, reels and baits.
Boundary Waters club donated a Garcia musky reel as a guide prize, plus clothing items and tackle.
Other sponsors were Dan Lazzeroni, Catstail Lures, Gary Fischer Fischtail Baits, Tackle Industries, Tom Betka, Roger Watters H2O Tackle, Pure Fishing, Wipfli, Vern Hollister, Nick Vento, BRP Evinrude, Pete Shippe and Belland & Son Plumbing.
Plans are being made to host next year's outing, tentatively set for July 18.
