GOODMAN, Wis. - Austin Glanzer and Trent Heath each scored 18 points as Goodman-Pembine downed Three Lakes 63-43 to open the WIAA Division 5 boys basketball regional tournament.
"This wasn't a thing of beauty for anyone involved, but the goal at this time of year is to survive and advance and we did against a scrappy team," Patriots coach Paul Whitt said. "I thought we started the game with tons of energy and took control early. The only concern throughout the half was our record number of fouls tonight."
Goodman-Pembine, leading 36-25 at halftime, collected 21 fouls in the game. Three Lakes converted 17 of 25 free throws.
"I think everyone has to get accustomed to the three-man officiating crews, and we never did," Whitt said. "Our inability to play defense without fouling would have been a problem in a closer game, so we'll have to make some adjustments."
Heath snared nine rebounds; Glanzer tallied five assists and three steals, and Randall Bose chipped in eight points.
"Trent (Heath) and Austin (Glanzer) had nice games, and I thought Randall (Bose) gave us a spark at the right times as well," Whitt said. "We really shot the ball well, and that takes some pressure off. Josh (Grandaw) and Mike (Bruce) gave us quality minutes with our foul trouble, and helped us stretch the lead as well."
Goodman-Pembine made 19 turnovers.
"I wasn't very happy with 19 turnovers, but most of them were from trying to be aggressive and weren't necessarily careless," Whitt said. "We also had lots of different combinations in the game, so there was uncertainty about where guys would be at times. It's hard to find fault with our 20th win."
Patriots (20-2) and Suring will meet in a regional semifinal at 7 p.m. Friday at Pembine.
"Our crowd was the best we've had all year, and it really helped our guys," Whitt said. "They were there early and were loud and encouraging.
"We need the same thing at Pembine Friday night as we take on a very good Suring team. I've watched them twice in the past couple of weeks, and they are a handful. I hope our Patriot fans are out in force Friday night."
