KINGSFORD - George J. Blagec, 87, of Kingsford, passed away on Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.
George was born March 3, 1926, in Iron Mountain, son of the late Emil and Anna (Kobasic) Blagec. He graduated from Kingsford High School in 1944, and was a lifelong resident of the area. Following graduation, George was drafted into the United States Navy and he served his country during World War II. He was employed by U.S. Steel on the ore boats for more than 43 years, starting as a deckhand and later as a wheelsman, retiring in 1986.
A big part of George's life was being a very faithful member of American Martyrs Catholic Church. He was a dedicated servant to God, never faltering in his faith and in turn touched many lives. He was also a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Bishop Baraga Council 1585 and served as Grand Knight.
George was an avid sports fan. He could recite the statistics of any Major League Baseball player and was especially fond of Ted Williams, Stan Musial and Joe Dimaggio, often saying "Those three guys were so talented they looked good striking out." He had an uncanny ability for remembering names and dates. He especially enjoyed cheering on the Kingsford Flivvers. He was a permanent fixture in the south end bleachers at Flivver Field.
He is survived by many nieces, nephews and a sister-in-law, Beverly Blagec.
George was preceded in death by his two brothers, Peter and Joseph Blagec.
Visitation will be Wednesday, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Kingsford Funeral Home.
