Lady Trojans top first hoops poll

SAULT STE. MARIE - Forest Park leads the season's first girls basketball poll of the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

The unbeaten Trojans, ranked No. 1 in the state by some polls, tops undefeated Superior Central in the U.P. rankings.

In boys basketball, unbeaten North Central heads Class D. Forest Park's boys, off to a 5-0 start, also received votes.

A five-person blue chip committee compiles the UPSSA poll (first-place votes in parentheses):

BOYS

Class ABC

1. Marquette (5) 5-0 record, 25 poll points; 2. Negaunee, 5-1, 20; 3. Escanaba, 4-2, 13; 4. Ironwood, 5-1, 9; 5. Gwinn, 3-1, 3.

Others receiving votes: Ishpeming, 2-0, 2; St. Ignace, 4-1, 2; Houghton, 5-1, 1.

Class D

1. North Central (5) 5-0, 25; 2. Munising 4-0, 14; 3. Lake Linden-Hubbell 5-0, 11; 4. Cedarville 5-1, 10; 5. Carney-Nadeau 4-1, 8.

Others receiving votes: Forest Park, 5-0; 5, Bessemer, 4-1, 2.

GIRLS

Class ABC

1. Marquette (5) 10-0 record, 25 poll points; 2. Calumet, 5-0, 15, and St. Ignace, 7-2, 15; 4. L'Anse 4-0, 13; 5. Houghton, 6-1, 6.

Others receiving votes: Menominee (5-1) 1.

Class D

1. Forest Park (4) 7-0, 24; 2. Superior Central (1) 7-0, 21; 3. Stephenson 6-0, 15; 4. Brimley 4-1, 7; 5. Ontonagon 5-0, 6.
