Gerald Sullivan

LORETTO - Gerald M. "Larry" Sullivan, 92, of Loretto, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2013, surrounded by his family.

He was born Oct. 2, 1921, in Appleton, Wis., son of the late George and Leora (Magaurn) Sullivan. Larry graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1939. After graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving from 1941-1945 in the South Pacific. He married Ethel Preisler on Nov. 18, 1944, while home on leave.

Gerald had worked for a short time at Ford Motor Co. and United Parcel Services. He then worked for Kimberly-Clark (Pentair) for 32 years, retiring in January 1982.

He was an avid outdoorsman. He was known for his woodworking skills, especially his picnic tables. Gerald was a wonderful family man and enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gerald and his wife Ethel recently celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary. He was a member of St. Barbara Catholic Church in Vulcan.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Ethel; six children, Gloria (Bill) Welch of Iron Mountain, Barbara (Richard) Ginocchio of Marquette, Colleen Povolo of Hermansville, Patrick (Debby) Sullivan of Vulcan, Deborah (David) Brisson of Iron Mountain and Sandra (Christopher) Hess of East Stroudsburg, Pa.; 17 grandchildren, Mark (Jennifer) Welch, Christopher Welch, Chad Welch, Michelle (Andrew) Ryan, Sara (Adam) Quiring, Dan (Kathy) Povolo, Jodi (Jamie) Marvin, Vicki (Jamie) Lindholm, Trisha Butterfield, Richelle Sullivan (Mike Robinson), James Sullivan, Andrew Brisson, Ethan Brisson, Ryan Hess (Amanda Michaud), Tylor Hess, Kyle Hess, and Michael Hess; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren; one brother, Dale Sullivan of North Carolina; and one brother-in-law, Carl Preisler of Kingsford.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Friday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Fr. TImothy Ekatitis will officiate.

Burial will be in Dickinson County Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family of Gerald Sullivan and the funds will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project.
