MARATHON, Wis. - Volleyball power Wausau Newman Catholic ended Goodman-Pembine's run in the WIAA Division 4 state tournament.
The Cardinals, behind 22 kills from freshman Mariah Whalen, downed the Patriots 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-11) in the sectional finals Saturday.
"It was a great season," Patriots coach Ashley Kalkofen said. "My team accomplished so much and made our schools very proud. I'm so thankful to be a part of this program.
"It was hard to end in sectional finals. We fought as hard as we could, but we competed with a team at a whole other level."
Newman (33-5), posting its fourth straight tournament sweep, enters the state level for the fifth time in six years. No team scored more than 20 points in a regional or sectional game against Newman.
The Patriots, a first-year volleyball co-op, finished the season with a 22-5 ledger.
"I am so proud to be their Patriot coach," Kalkofen said. "And look forward in seeing most of these athletes play patriot basketball."
Leaders for the Patriots in the match included Marissa Moloney with 29 assists, Rachel Stankevich with seven kills, two digs and one block, and Courtney Goyak with seven kills, and two blocks.
