Hundreds of participants walk up West A Street in Iron Mountain during the fifth annual Dickinson County Out Of The Darkness Suicide Prevention Awareness Memorial Walk held Sept. 7 at Iron Mountain City Park.

IRON MOUNTAIN - More than 300 people attended the fifth annual Dickinson County Out Of The Darkness Suicide Prevention Awareness Memorial Walk held Sept. 7 at the City Park in Iron Mountain.

Seventeen walk teams and hundreds of individual walkers came out for the growing event.

"There was a record number of walk participants this year," said Tina Tappy, 2013 walk co-chairman.

The Dickinson County Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention and Awareness group is affiliated with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), which is the leading national not-for-profit organization dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy, and to reaching out to people with mental disorders and those impacted by suicide.

The group has been working hard to help the community erase stigma and walk in the light of hope and out of the darkness of depression and mental illness.

"I am deeply touched that the community stood together at the walk to address the stigma of depression, mental illness and suicide." said Tappy.

This year's event included a memorial quilt, dove release, suicide prevention materials, drawings, horseback riding, carnival games, clowns and balloons, coloring, face painting, Freedom Guard Riders, Kingsford and North Dickinson cheerleaders and guest speaker and live music by Mark Young, LMSW LCSW.

The event has raised $6,354 so far and donations can still be accepted online until Dec. 31.
