State bocce would have met with Ray's approval

The late Ray Mariucci would have been proud of the Dickinson Area Bocce Association's efforts in running the Michigan Open state tournament.

The DABA founder could be a stickler for things, but tourney co-directors John Gaudette and Mike Constantini along with dedicated volunteers ran a great tournament.

As Gaudette noted, "The longest day in sports took on a new meaning."

I consider the U.P. Track & Field Finals at Kingsford as the longest day in sports, but the bocce tourney went from 7 in the morning to 8:30 at night.

Gaudette said Ray would be proud of:

"We had teams from four different areas of the state, truly making this a state tournament ... We had teen-agers and people in their nineties, showing this is a game for people of all ages ... We had four women players, proving it is not just a game for the guys ... We had five people in their twenties and two first-year players, fulfilling Ray's dream of growing the sport."
