State bocce champs determined Saturday

City Park hosting annual tournament

IRON MOUNTAIN - Forty-three players representing 13 teams will compete in the state bocce tournament Saturday at City Park.

Dickinson Area Bocce Association, hosting the tournament in memory of group founder Ray Mariucci, announced the state teams have been placed by random draw into two round-robin divisions.

Players will be coming from Kalamazoo, Iron Mountain, Portage, Kingsford, Vulcan, Portage, Gaastra, Bloomfield Hills, Quinnesec, Sylvan Lake, Breitung Township and Dearborn to compete in the 15th annual tournament.

All players will get to participate in a minimum of five games. The top teams from each division will move on to a single elimination playoff for the state championship.

The first-place team gets receive a team bocce trophy, $520, medals and unique hand-made trophies. The other top three places will receive medals and their share of $690 in prizes.

The four top teams who do make it into the championship playoff have the chance to play in the consolation bracket, which has a top prize of $100.

All contestants, event sponsors and team sponsors will receive custom designed shirts featuring the DABA logo and the Cornish Pump, lunch and a bronze medallion featuring a bust of Ray Mariucci.

Michigan Open Bocce Tournament features three-player teams, each player delivering two balls and playing from both ends of the court. An alternate team member can sub in once per game.

Games are played to 12 points with the championship games to 15.

Teams entered in the state championship are Best Shot Billiards, Bimbo's Wine Press, CCI Systems, Da Vinci Bocce, Dude's Delivery, Erickson-Rochon and Nash, Kalamazoo Bocce Club, Kuhn's Construction, Northern Michigan Bank & Trust, Papa Lou's, Threads, Three Speeds and Woodlands Motel.

Under the guidance of Shelly and Jo Ellison, the City Park courts have been in the midst of renovation and improvement projects.

Activities will begin at 8 a.m. with the singing of the National Anthem, rules review, ceremonial toss, order of play and invocation.

All players must be in the park at 8:30 a.m., with the tournament starting promptly at 9 a.m.
