Spencer elected new 5th Zone American Legion commander

PICKFORD - Dave Spencer, Pickford American Legion Post 323, was elected 5th Zone commander of the American Legion, Department of Michigan to serve 2013-14. The 5th Zone comprises the 11th and 12th Districts of the Upper Peninsula.

Spencer has been a member of the American Legion for 27 years. He served in the Army from June 1974 to June 1977.

He worked for the state of Michigan, Department of Corrections from May 1978 to September of 1996.

He is a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the AmVets.

Spencer has been a volunteer at the Oscar Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iron Mountain for 12 years and has more than 100,000 miles as a driver of the DAV van.

He has been a service officer working at the Veterans Administration clinic in Sault Ste. Marie for the past five years.

In 2007 and 2008 Spencer was appointed National Deputy Chief of staff for the Disabled American Veterans.

He went up the ranks of the American Legion as post commander, District commander and now 5th Zone commander.

"My goal this year is to work with the American Legion to better service the veterans and their family in the U.P.," said a spokesperson.
