U.P. man perishes in house fire

NEWBERRY - A 79-year-old man is dead following a structure fire in Luce County Thursday morning.

Emergency units were dispatched to a reported residential structure fire at 23340 County Road 438 in Luce County's Lakefield Township at 5:49 a.m.

Upon arrival, emergency personnel found the residence fully engulfed in flames. Preliminary investigation concluded that the 79-year-old homeowner Forrest Alan Rank was the sole occupant and victim of the fatal house fire, according to the Luce County Sheriff's Office.

The fire is believed to have been caused as a result of a lightning strike during Thursday night's severe thunderstorms. The fire remains under investigation.
