George Righter

IRON MOUNTAIN - George Robert Righter, 86, of Iron Mountain, passed away Saturday, June 1, 2013, at the Oscar G. Johnson V.A. Medical Center in Iron Mountain.

He was born Feb 22, 1927, in Kingsford, son of the late Jack and Lillian (LaRoche) Righter. He grew up and attended school in Kingsford and graduated from Kingsford High School in 1944. He joined the U.S. Navy and was in World War II. He then entered the U.S. Air Force and was in the Korean War. He attended Columbia College and in 1954, joined the Michigan State Police and was a State Police officer until he retired in 1972.

He married Joyce Christine Johnson in 1952, and they divorced in 1975. In 1976 he married Elizabeth Arletta Ponchaud and they remained married until his death. After retiring, George and Elizabeth lived in Winterhaven, Fla., in the winter months and returned to the U.P. in the summer. In 1978 they became residents of Florida. They remained in Florida until the winter of 2011 when they relocated back to the U.P.

George was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, Michigan State Police Command Officers Association, and Michigan State Police Troopers Association. George was most proud of his military service and his service with the Michigan State Police. He was a big fan of sports, especially of the Cubs, Packers, Celtics, and the Indians.

George is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Arletta Righter; one son, Michael G. Righter of Iron Mountain; three daughters, Bobbie J. (Michael) Peterson of Iron Mountain, Rebecca L. Zavada of Salinas, Calif., and Mary Beth Vincent of Spring, Texas; a stepdaughter, Beth Waller of Plymouth, Wis.; one brother, Jack Righter of Winterhaven, Fla.; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lillian Righter; his father, Jack Righter; and a sister, Eileen Chaput.

There will be a private burial service at a later date.

The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Homes and Cremation Services of Iron Mountain with the arrangements.
