STAMBAUGH - One may have to check the archives to find out when the West Iron County girls were last crowned West-Pac Conference track champions prior to Wednesday.

West Iron County’s Elizabeth Pellizzer hands off to Carli Johnson during Wednesday’s 800 meter relay.

None of that matters to the Wykons right now, however, as they earned this year's title with 111 points. They were followed by Houghton and Calumet 90, Hancock 50 and L'Anse 9.

"It has been a very long time," said West Iron coach Kristi Berutti, who was named girls Coach of the Year. "This hasn't happened in the 10 years I've been coaching. This is the best I've seen a group come together while I've been here."

The Calumet boys retained the title with 116 1/4 points, followed by Houghton 106 1/4, West Iron 81, Hancock 30 3/4 and L'Anse 13 3/4.

West Iron's girls collected four firsts and used their depth to secure victory on this cloudy, chilly and wet day at Nelson Field.

"We had two girls out with injuries," said Berutti. "They knew they had to pull together and they did, which shows the depth of our team. This has been a tough meet for us over the years. The Copper Country teams are always tough."

West Iron's Cassilyn Pellizzer won the 300-meter hurdles in 50.56 seconds, placed second in high jump at four feet, eight inches, took third in the 100 hurdles (17.29) and anchored the winning 800 relay. She was named the league's leader in sprints and hurdles.

Casey Harrington added a first in the 100 (13.53). Megan Miatech captured shot put (32-10 1/2) and was runner-up in discus (90-6 1/2).

Harrington also helped the Wykons place second in the 400 and 800 relays.

West Iron's Carli Johnson was runner-up in the 200 (27.96), Kylee Erickson second in the open 800 (2:45.15) and Rebekah Serbinski was runner-up in the 3200 (13:19.56).

West Iron County's boys finished third behind champion Calumet and second-place Houghton.

Ryan Rogers, the league's Most Valuable Athlete, led the West Iron boys by winning long jump (19-1) and helping the winning 400, 800 and 1600 relays.

Also winning for West Iron were Chasz Jonet in shot put (44-7 1/2) and Bryson Heimerl in discus (117-0). Jonet was named MVP of the field events.

West Iron's Nik Thoney was runner-up in the 200 (24.43) and third in the 100 (11.75) and helped the sprint relays.

The Wykons now await the Upper Peninsula Division 2 Finals, which take place June 1 at Kingsford.

Brendan Jacques and Houghton's Noah Budd were co-MVPs in the sprints and hurdles, with Houghton's Jacob Colling receiving similar honors in the distances.

Calumet's Leah Kiilunen was named the girls' top distance runner, with Houghton's Elisa Jurma the field events MVP.

Calumet's Mark Bonenfant were selected boys Coach of the Year.
