KINGSFORD - Limiting Gladstone to nine hits all day, Kingsford swept an American Legion baseball doubleheader 5-1 and 16-4 Sunday afternoon at Lodal Park's Spigarelli Field.

"I really thought that our pitchers did a nice job throwing the ball," Blues manager Kevin Murdock said. "No walks in game one was excellent. Our pitching and defense will be the strength of this team."

Mike McCole and Cole Michaud handled the mound duties in the first game. McCole went five innings in a start, allowing four hits while striking out six. Michaud finished by giving up just two more hits with two strikeouts.

Mike McCole pitched the Kingsford Blues to victory in the first game of a doubleheader with Gladstone Sunday at Spigarelli Field.

A four-run fourth broke a 1-1 tie and sent Kingsford on its way. Cole Tengesdahl ripped three hits, and Gabe Swanson added two more. C.J. Qualley, Austin Murdock and Wes Paupore also had hits.

In game 2, Qualley, Aidan Wienke and Brandon Kowalkowski pitched. Wienke got the most work, throwing the middle three innings of what was a five-inning contest. He gave up one hit and fanned four while walking three. Kowalkowski came on in the fifth and whiffed three in a row.

"Aidan had a real nice game going until he developed a blister, but then BK came in and struck out three batters in a row which was nice to see," Murdock said.

After Gladstone scored one in the first, the Blues responded with eights runs in the bottom of the first. Five more runs in the second and three in the third pushed the game beyond the 10-run mercy rule.

Kingsford's 12 hits included three from Anthony Rebera and two from Wienke. Cole Tengesdahl tripled, and Conner Berndt doubled. Qualley, Paupore, Kowalkowski, Justin Grailer and Murdock singled.

"Cole Tengesdahl is on a different level right now," Murdock said. "He is seeing beach balls and everyone else is still seeing baseballs."
