Sexual Assault Awareness Month
On April 30th, in observance of April being Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Caring House hosted an Open House and the 2nd Annual Candle Light Vigil. During the Open House a Survivors' Art Gallery was displayed. The Art Gallery included pictures, poetry and art work created by survivors to tell their stories of overcoming abuse.
The Vigil was held to bring the issue of sexual assault to the forefront and to demonstrate support for victims. Prayers were led by Chad Harrison youth pastor of the Evangelical Covenant Church of Norway and songs were performed by Alicia Barkley. Participants from throughout the community lit candles to demonstrate their support for survivors.
One out of every six American women have been the victims of an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime. About 3% of American men have experience an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime. About 44% of rape victims are under the age of 18. Three out of every twenty victims are under the age of 12.
Sexual assault includes a wide range of victimization. It may involve actual or threatened physical force, use of guns or other weapons, coercion, intimidation, or pressure. The perpetrator of sexual violence may be a stranger, friend, family member or intimate partner.
