IRON MOUNTAIN - Robert Dale Byrum, 56, passed away Monday, April 29, 2013, in Richmond, Va., after a courageous battle with many health issues.

Dale was born on Valentine's Day in 1957, son of the late Wilma Pitchford and Darrell Byrum, in Fort Worth, Texas. He was a resident of Texas for 37 years; relocating to the Iron Mountain area in 1994.

He was a master plumber for 20 years before deciding to live his dream of becoming a paramedic. He was a very caring, loving, gentle man with a passion for life and a sense of humor bigger than he was.

Dale's pride and joy were his two granddaughters, his daughter and his Chihuahua, Taco. He was a big jokester who enjoyed time with family and friends more than anything. He was blessed to have reconnected with the "Rosemont Gang" and never missed a day of checking his e-mail.

He is survived by his daughter, Michelle Byrum (Kim Balderas) of Iron Mountain; his granddaughters, Amy and Natalie Dykhuis of Iron Mountain; a stepson, Jacob Schmitzer of Flint, Mich.; special family members, Robert (Cheryl) Blumerich, Debra (Charlie) Cooley, Glen (Lovena) Garrison and Sandra Sakallah all of Texas; a special friend, Donna Brucher of Lancaster, Va.; and other family and friends.

His life will be celebrated with an open house at his daughter's home on May 18, from noon to 8 p.m.

A private service will be held in Texas at a later date.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be made to Family Ties Adult Center of Iron Mountain, in his honor.
