KINGSFORD - Escanaba overcame Kingsford's stellar third-round performance to capture the Great Northern Conference competitive cheer championship Thursday.
The Eskymos compiled 702.04 points to best the Flivvers, 696.38; Gladstone, 682.14, and Marquette, 646.64.
Kingsford, shorthanded with one of the seniors involved in a car accident, trailed Escanaba by 13 points entering the third round. The Flivvers chalked up 283.9 third-round points to 276.9 for the Eskymos.

"As a result (of the lineup change), we incurred a 10-point penalty prior to starting round two as we had less then the division mandated number for this round," Flivver coach Sara Pericolosi said. "The girls did a great job adjusting as we found out about a half hour before the start of the meet that she would be unable to compete.
"Despite the changes, we had our best overall score tonight which is what we're looking for heading into districts next week."
Kingsford and Gladstone are part of the Division 3 district tournament next week at Houghton Lake.
