CRYSTAL FALLS - Tim Aho of Crystal Falls Township has been appointed to fill the vacant district five seat on the Iron County Board of Commissioners until a special election can be held later this year.
District five consists of Crystal Falls Township, Mansfield Township, and Hematite Township.
Following the resignation of former commissioner Bev Camp, who has fallen ill, the board advertised for applicants to temporarily take over her position.
Two people applied: Aho and Dennis Divoky.
Current commissioners Carl Lind, Ray Coates, Jim Brennan, and Patti Peretto interviewed both applicants on Monday morning.
During a special meeting on Monday afternoon, they unanimously chose Aho.
"It's not often you get two good candidates," said Peretto. "This was a difficult decision."
Aho is a former member of the Crystal Falls Township Board of Trustees. According to minutes from the interview session, he has experience working as a project manager, running his own business, and doing real estate development.
Aho's appointment to the board is only temporary. Since Camp resigned in an odd year, a special election for her seat will need to be held sometime this year.
Election dates are available in May, August, and November.
Whoever wins the election will fill the district five seat for the remainder of the term, which lasts until the end of 2014.
In other business, the board:
- Decided to not send a letter of appeal to the U.S. Forest Service over plans to bypass Iron River in a new off-road vehicle (ORV) route. Iron County Chamber of Commerce Director Bob Black explained that he recently had a meeting with forest service officials.
Although the forest service will go ahead with plans to locate the ORV route to the northwest of Iron River, it will work with the chamber to create more signage that will direct trail users to downtown Iron River, Black said.
- Discussed changing the date and time of regular meetings. At their last meeting, commissioners decided to hold meetings on the second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. However, Peretto noticed a conflict with Iron River Township's regular meetings. Commissioners said that they would check their schedules before naming another date and time.
- Appointed new county treasurer Melanie Camps to the Iron County Building Authority in place of retired county treasurer Marcia Cornelia.
