Elizabeth Maurer

IRON MOUNTAIN - Elizabeth "Betty" Ann Maurer, 59, of Spread Eagle, Wis., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, at her home with her husband at her side.

She was born Dec. 29, 1953, in Bad Axe, Mich., daughter of the late Stanley and Rita (Kubacki) Helewski. Betty graduated from Ubly High School, Ubly, Mich., class of 1972. She received her LPN degree from St. Clair County Community College in Port Huron in 1972.

Betty married Brian Maurer on May 12, 1984, in Florida. They resided in Florida for 17 years, later residing in Seattle, New York State, and in 2003, moved to Crystal Falls where they resided until 2009, at which time they moved to Spread Eagle.

Betty worked as an LPN while living in Florida and while living in Crystal Falls. She took care of many of the elderly in their homes as a home care worker. She enjoyed many hobbies including bird watching, feeding the birds and her chickens, walking, being outdoors, sewing, cooking, making quilts for her family whom she loved very much, and always could be found helping her husband with many of his chores.

She is survived by her loving husband of 28 years, Brian; two brothers, Dave (Jean) Helewski of Bad Axe and Rick (Julie) Helewski of Ubly; eight sisters, Pat (Ken) Majeski of Kinde, Mich., Marge (Dick) Frantz of Kinde; Sue (Carl) Weber of Ubly; Barb (Don) Kolar of Minden City, Mich., Marilyn (Rob) Grocholski of Bay City, Mich., Carlin (Steve) Maurer of Bad Axe, Mary Jo Cleary of Ubly, Lorie (Rich) Block of Ruth, Mich.; a sister-in-law, Paula (Ross) Westbrook of Williamston, Mich.; brothers-in-law, Doug (Jan) Maurer and Terry (Sheryl) Maurer; and many nieces and nephews.

A special thanks to the nurses and staff at Dickinson Home Health in Iron Mountain.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the Dickinson County Cancer Loan Closet, 1401 Carpenter Ave., Iron Mountain, MI 49801; or to the Nature Conservancy, 4245 N. Fairfax Drive, Suite 100, Arlington, VA, 22203.

The family has chosen the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron Mountain to honor Betty's legacy of life.
