CLARE, Mich. - Harold William "Bill" Schaeffer, age 81 of Clare, passed away following an extended illness on Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012, at the Woodland Hospice House in Mt. Pleasant.
Bill was born the son of Harold H. and Sarah (Bauer) Schaeffer on Sept. 23, 1931, in Clare. Bill was united in marriage to Betty Wurts on Sept. 6, 1952, in Clare.
He served his country with four years of active duty during the Korean War in the U.S. Air Force and four years of reserve duty.
Bill had been the owner/operator of Schaeffer's Restaurant in Clare. Being very community minded, Bill had served on the Clare Fire Department for 20 years, had been a member of the Clare Civitan Club as well as the first ambulance driver for Clare County EMS.
He was a big supporter of the Girl Scouts, the 4-H Livestock Auction and had driven school bus for the Clare Public Schools for six years. Bill was an active member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Clare.
Bill is survived by his wife, Betty; son, Jim (Ann) Schaeffer of Clare; daughters, Susan "Sue" (Bruce) Casagranda of Crystal Falls, Vivian "Vicki" (Conrad) Holovach of Flint, and Cathy McKibben of Alabama; a brother, Ken (Bonnie) Schaeffer of Mt. Pleasant; a sister, Jan Voss of Clare; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Bill was predeceased by his parents and a grandson.
Visitation for Bill will be held today at the Clare Chapel of Stephenson-Wyman Funeral Home from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m., and 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.
Services will take place on Friday at 11 a.m. at the St. John's Lutheran Church with Pastor Paul C. Fetzer officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens Cemetery Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
