NEGAUNEE - Iron Mountain, under new coach Brandon Rutter, launched the high school wrestling season Thursday by beating Negaunee, 36-30, and Marquette, 37-36.
"It was a huge night with two big wins for the team," Rutter said. "As a team we came in shorthanded, but our experience showed."
Alex Edwards (125), Corbin Henkel (135), Jacob Weslin (140) and Tanner Chouinard (145) posted Mountaineer pins against the Miners.
David Jones (112), Izzy Barazza (135) and Chouinard (145) came through with falls against the Redmen. Weslin produced a 10-1 decision.
Rutter cited Corbin Henkel's decision over Hunter Moore.
"Corbin wrestled an outstanding match against a tough wrestler," Rutter said. "Corbin set the tone for the match against Marquette.
"Izzy Barazza's pin was also huge momentum booster."
The Mountaineers wrestle Saturday in the Westwood Invitational.
"The team has a lot of work to do yet, but we're heading in the right direction," Rutter said.
In jayvee matches, Mountaineers' Dustin Johnson posted two pins.
In other varsity matches Thursday, Gladstone dumped Marquette, 37-15, and Negaunee, 75-6.
"We're a young team," first-year Negaunee coach Brad Saatio said. "I wrestled four freshmen, but it was a good experience for us to see new faces other than what we've seen in practice. We just have to work on some small things."
