Mountaineers return solid nucleus as season opens tonight

December 6, 2012
The Daily News

IRON MOUNTAIN - Iron Mountain, led by 2012 state finals qualifier Jared Gauthier, opens the high school wrestling season tonight at Negaunee.

"We are looking forward to the season," said new Mountaineer coach Brandon Rutter, assisted by Darren Groleau. "We have a solid group of guys this year who will bring a lot of experience to the mat."

Gauthier, a standout at 112, along with four other regional qualifiers - David Jones, Alex Edwards, Corbin Henkel and Jacob Weslin - give the Mountaineers a solid nucleus.

"There are going to be some tough matches right away," said Rutter, noting the Marquette Challenge on Dec. 15. Although will we be giving a lot of forfeits in team duals, individual tournament scoring we should be right up there with the rest.

"The team has been working hard preparing for the upcoming season."

Mountaineers will face the host Miners and Marquette in tonight's match. Ryan Lobeck has also been assisting the team and Aaron Bolo is team manager.

Through graduation, Iron Mountain lost state qualifiers Ryan Gauthier and Chase Gendron plus Josiah Waitrovich.

Roster follows (names and probable weight class):

SENIORS - David Jones 112-119, Tanner Chouinard 140-145, Dustin Johnson 130.

SOPH - Izzy Barazza 130, Alex Edwards 112, Jared Gauthier 119, Corbin Henkel 130, Steffan Petricca 135, Jacob Weslin 140.
