MARINETTE, Wis. - Foul trouble, turnovers and missed free throws hurt Florence in a 65-53 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas Academy in the Bobcats' boys basketball season opener.

The Bobcats, with just seven players, had two players sit in the second quarter with foul trouble. Florence also tallied 31 turnovers and missed 20 of 37 free throws.

"Turnovers killed us and we shot poorly from the floor and from the line," Florence Coach Tom Beck said. "First game jitters for an inexperienced team may have played a role early."

Florence trailed 35-19 at halftime

"We played a much better second half," said Beck, his Bobcats outscoring STAA 33-30.

Junior Kiefer Powers scored 30 points to lead the Cavaliers (2-1).

Austin Herman led the Bobcats with 13 points and Tyler Valine added 11.

"Valine had a nice varsity debut," Beck said.
