"Yeah, we ran out of legs," Flivvers coach Jim Peterson said. "We needed to score early. We lost our legs a little bit, and they were taking it to us toward the end of the game."

A Ted Pietila goal, assisted by Tyler Wiitanen, at 14:09 of the second period made it a 1-1 game entering the third frame. But Bayport's Connor Destache pushed one through in the opening minute of the third to give the visitors the lead for good.

Pirates' captain Drew Neuville, who assisted on the go-ahead marker, drilled a slap shot from the left side for Bayport's final score with less than six minutes to play.

"We didn't give them any quality chances, really, for the first couple of periods," Peterson said. "And then that early goal in the third period hurt."

Bayport, trailing in shots 23-11 through the first two periods, outshot the Flivvers 15-3 in the final stanza.

"We had our chances," Peterson said. "We just have to shoot more. We had chances to shoot, even right in close, but we were trying to pass it instead."

Penalties also limited opportunities for the Flivvers. Kingsford had five minors to Bayport's three. Pietila committed a boarding major in the game's final minute and got a game disqualification meaning he will sit the next two contests as a result.

"Penalties," Peterson said. "A bunch of penalties there. We never got our power play set up, never got quality shots."

After a scoreless first period, Bayport's Brady DeBouche broke through at 10:54 of the second, with help from Samuel Chalie and Roman Buss.

Wes Paupore took the loss in net, stopping 23 shots. Bayport's Bret Neuville made 25 saves.

"First game, we were a little nervous," Peterson said. "We had a lot of kids in their first high school game. They're a good team.

"We'll build on it. We're not going win every game, but overall, not bad."
