Niagara’s Jordan Zawada (41) moves past Lena’s Matt Marquardt (3) and Roy O’Harrow (12) in Thursday’s M&O Conference basketball game.
The Badgers, humbled by league favorite Peshtigo in their season opener Tuesday, rolled past Lena 63-24 in M&O Conference boys basketball.
Jordan Zawada's game-high 20 points, 11 rebounds and four steals keyed the Badgers. Coach Jim Hoogland mentioned all facets in noting improvements from Tuesday.
"Add all those together and we played pretty well," Hoogland said. "They worked hard the whole game and everybody got a chance to play."
Niagara owned an 11-0 lead with two minutes left in the first quarter and pumped the margin to 34-8 at halftime. Zawada had 12 points in the first half.
"We played offense with a lot more confidence, especially in the second half," Hoogland said. "That really helped cut our turnovers down. We were rushing too much in the first half."
Joey Swanson chipped in 12 points and TJ Liebergen had eight for the Badgers, who shot 46 percent from the floor. Colin Anderson grabbed seven rebounds.
"Our rebounding edge was also a major factor," said Hoogland, noting a 33-15 margin.
Justin Heimke's 16 points paced the young Wildcats, who show four freshmen on the roster.
Niagara (1-1) hosts Goodman-Pembine on Monday, Nov. 26.
Adam Parent's 16 points sparked Niagara's junior varsity past Lena 49-14. Patrick Moreau tacked on 10 points and Dyllan Pultz had nine.
