The Daily News

IRON RIVER - Mark Tousignant, a lifelong resident of Iron County, is a candidate for probate judge.

Following high school, he obtained a bachelor's degree from Michigan State University and a juris doctorate degree from Hamline University School of Law.

Mark returned to Iron County in 1977 to take advantage of the many attributes it offered as a place to live and raise a family. Since that time, he have been actively engaged in the practice of law and is licensed in the Michigan and Wisconsin state and federal courts.

Over the years, he has been, and continues to be actively involved in community and civic endeavors to improve the quality of life in Iron County. For over 15 years Mark has had a leadership role on the NorthStar Health System Board of Directors and since 2010 has served as chairman of the board.

In support of his candidacy he states: "It has been 20 years since the position of probate judge in Iron County has been contested. Fundamental to our democracy is the election of our representatives and judges. When a candidate stands for election unopposed, the voters are denied a choice. The voters of Iron County deserve a choice when it comes to the election of their probate judge. I offer that choice.

"Essential to my system of beliefs is that the United States was founded on, and, must continue to be governed by laws and not men. It is the law that allows us to thrive as a civilized society. Only by a strict adherence to the law, starting at the local level, can democracy continue to thrive. When the law gives way to politics or the emotions of the moment, the government fails and ultimately so does civilized society.

"I have lived by these principals throughout my entire legal career. As the Iron County Probate Judge, I would be committed to protecting the integrity of the court, applying the law in a fair and consistent manner."

Mark looks forward to discussing the role of probate judge in Iron County with the voters over the next several weeks.

Mark has two children, Dennis and Jennifer, and two grandchildren. He is married to Jody DePuydt-Tousignant.
