IRON MOUNTAIN - The Dickinson County Office of Veteran Affairs and Upper Peninsula Commission for Area Progress (UPCAP) Services Office of Community Corrections has placed a Christmas tree called a Soldiers Wish Tree at the YMCA in Iron Mountain.
Denise Formolo, Community Corrections Coordinator for Upper Peninsula Commission for Area Progress (UPCAP) Services, decorates the Soldiers Wish Tree with the names of children in need of Christmas wishes at the Dickinson County YMCA in Iron Mountain.
This tree represents wishes of the 1432nd National Guard soldiers for gifts for their children this holiday season.
This National Guard Unit is currently serving in Afghanistan and will not be home for the holidays this year, said Denise Formolo, Community Corrections Coordinator for (UPCAP) Services.
The 1432nd Engineering Co. is based in Kingsford and Iron River.
The unit, along with the 1433rd Engineering Company is from Kalamazoo, was deployed to Afghanistan in May.
The two units combined as one and are assisting the U.S. Army with Route Clearance Operations in Afghanistan.
"We ask the community to come down and take a tag, purchase a gift and returned it unwrapped by Nov. 5," she said.
"We will also be accepting gift cards and monetary donations," she said.
The gifts include teddy bears, cars, trucks, baby dolls, and electronic items.
The gifts will be given to the children of the 1432nd National Guard soldiers at a Christmas party being planned by the Office of Veteran Affairs and the UPCAP Office of Community Corrections.
