Maurice Vermulen

CHANNING - Maurice A. Vermulen, 90, of Channing, passed away on Friday, October 12, 2012, at the Iron County Medical Care Facility in Crystal falls.

He was born June 7, 1922, in Channing, son of the late Edward and Mary (Lusnia) Vermulen. He attended school in Channing, graduating from Channing High School in 1940. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, and after being honorably discharged he went to work for Mattson Airlines.

He then moved to lower Michigan where he worked as the union organizer for the Electric Line Workers. Maurice moved back to Channing in 1987.

He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Channing, and the American Legion Post 50, which merged with the Channing American Legion. He loved to trout fish, hunt, and travel.

Maurice is survived by his companion, Hazel Byers of Channing, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Leonard "Bud" Vermulen; and sisters, Edna Rossi, and Violet "Dolly" Barrs.

Visitation will be Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Rose Catholic Church in Channing. Fr. Raymond Valerio will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

Burial will take place in the Channing Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his memory.

The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the funeral arrangements.
