Harold Soderberg

SPREAD EAGLE, Wis. - Harold "Sody" Soderberg, 89, of Spread Eagle, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012, at Hyland Nursing Home in Iron Mountain.

He was born on May 16, 1923, in Iron Mountain, to the late Ernest and Lilly (Barker) Soderberg. He grew up in Iron Mountain, where he made and maintained many friendships through the years, about which he loved to reminisce in his later years.

Sody was well-liked, friendly, and good natured. He will be missed by those who remember him.

He pedaled papers for the Iron Mountain News as a young fellow, and in his high school years, Harold worked as an usher at the Colonial and Braumart Theatres.

He graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1941, after which he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was sent overseas in World War II. He fought in the European Theater, where he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged at the end of the war.

He began working at the then Iron Mountain News as an advertising salesman. He met the "love of his life" Colleen C. Wahlstrom and the couple married on June 18, 1947, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church. They enjoyed 65 wonderful years, all of which they were inseparable. Harold and Colleen made their home in Kingsford and raised two daughters.

He became publisher of The Daily News until his retirement. He and Colleen wintered in Mesa, Ariz., where they enjoyed warm weather, golf, and many dear and lasting friendships. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Mesa, and also the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain, where he was a member of the church council for two years.

During his working years he was past president of the Kiwanis Club, a member of the Elks, and United Commercial Travelers. Harold also belonged to the Free & Accepted Masons Iron Mountain Lodge 388 and went on to become a 32nd degree Shriner.

He was an avid golfer and was a member of Pine Grove Country Club for more than 50 years. Sody served as a member of the Breitung Township School Board of Education from 1962-1966.

He is survived by his beloved wife Colleen. He will be sadly missed and forever loved by his daughters, Virginia "Ginny" (Dave) Sanders, and Sheryl (Chris) Alberti. He will be always remembered and cherished by his grandchildren, Mark (Dana) Michaud, Michael (Andrea) Michaud, and Aubrey (Shane) Hawkins, and his great-grandsons, Adam Michaud, Brett Michaud, and Connor Michaud. He also leaves his brother-in-law, Jack (Betty) Wahlstrom; his step-grandson, Scott (Shannon) Sanders and their children Brian and Bryonna; and many nieces and nephews.

Harold was preceded in death by three sisters, Lillian Rowe, Verle Hendricks, and Barbara Borsini; two brothers, Leslie and Calvin Soderberg; and his grandson, Christopher Alberti.

Visitation will be Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain.

Funeral services will be at noon at the church. Rev. James Lindgren will officiate.

Entombment will be in Cemetery Park. Graveside military rites will be accorded by the Uren-Cooper-Johnson American Legion Post 50.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Hyland Nursing Home for their incredible care.
