CHANNING - Mary C. Daniels, 89, of Channing, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012.
Mary was born Dec. 8, 1922, in Nashville, Ga., daughter of Isham and Mary (Starling) Clyatt. She was raised in Pompano Beach, Fla. by her sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Jesse Ogden after the death of both of her parents while she was still quite young.
Mary met Bob Daniels while on a trip to the U.P. to visit her sister Barbara, and they were married on Oct. 20, 1956. Their life journey together spanned 56 years, and was an inspiration to all who knew them. Bob passed away in May, and she follows just a short four months later.
After receiving her registered nurse's training at Riverside Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla., during World War II, she worked at several doctor's offices, hospitals and the health department. She served for several years as night supervisor of the emergency department at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital until her retirement in 1978.
Before there was a "STAR Ambulance" in Channing, there was Mary Daniels. She made herself available to a grateful townspeople for everything from minor cuts to heart attacks. She kept a stretcher handy at the house to transport patients in the family station wagon.
Mary brought refinement and elegance to her surroundings. Never a hair out of place, and always dressed fashionably (complete with the proper jewelry) she is remembered as a "classy" lady by many. She showed Yoopers a bit of Southern charm, and her fried chicken will especially be missed.
Her deep and abiding faith made her an excellent prayer warrior, and once asked to pray for someone, she kept them on her list until she saw results.
Mary is survived by daughters Diane (Vincent) Roell, Mary Lu Daniels, and Carolyn (Bob) Kennard, all of Channing; "adopted" son Mychael Stafford of Green Bay, Wis.; 10 grandchildren, Brian (Kendra) Roell, Joseph (Bronwyn) Roell, Jamie (Julie) Roell, Karisa Falls, Wade (Daphne) Kennard, Blake Kennard, Abigail (Benjamin) Garcia, Katelyn (Kyle) Kubacki, Bailey Stafford, and Jacob Stafford; eight great-grandchildren, and a ninth great-grandchild she would have been happy to welcome in April.
In addition to her husband, Bob, and her parents, Mary was preceded in death by three sisters, Ernestine, Carolyn and Barbara; and five brothers, Robert, Farrie, Russell, Sam and Johnny.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain and from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Thursday at Grace Presbyterian Church in Sagola.
The funeral service will follow Thursday at 11 a.m. at the church. Rev. David Anderson will officiate.
