MARQUETTE - The driver of an off-road vehicle was injured Sunday afternoon in a head-on crash with a Jeep Cherokee on County Road 573 in Marquette County's Ishpeming Township.
The victim, a 17-year-old-male from Ishpeming, was transported to Marquette General Hospital, according to a press release issued Sunday night by the Marquette County Sheriff's Office. It was reported that his injuries were serious, but not life-threatening at this point.
The accident occurred at about 4:45 p.m. (Eastern time) when the driver of the southbound Jeep Cherokee, a 39-year-old male from Marquette, came around a curve and noticed the four-wheeler traveling northbound in his lane.
The operator of the Yamaha ORV was attempting to pass another ORV when the crash occurred, deputies said.
The crash, which took place at Deer Lake Road about 3.6 miles north of County Road GM, remains under investigation. The driver of the ORV was wearing a helmet and alcohol was not a factor, deputies said.
Assisting the sheriff's office were the Ishpeming Township Fire Department, Ishpeming Township First Responders and Bell Memorial EMS.
