NORWAY - The Norvulet Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4581 will hold its annual picnic at Marion Park on Sunday, Aug. 19, beginning at noon
The post did not have a July meeting, so the picnic plans, which was originally set for Aug. 12, weren't complete.
Extending the date by a week should work out better, notes a spokesperson.
According to some older members, the annual picnic has been held for more than 50 years.
Brats, grilled sweet corn, and cold beverages are featured on the menu. All current 4581 members, ladies from the former auxiliary, and invited guests are welcome.
Quartermaster Frannie McCarthy informed the members that he had increased the amount of the insurance deductible the post pays to save money.
He also reported that the post's finances look good for the time being, thanks to the $1,000 donation from the Veterans Tribute motorcycle group. Their generosity is greatly appreciated.
The money will be spent to repair structural problems with the post building, as per request.
Another veterans' group has already expressed interest in doing the work as a fund-raiser for their organization.
Commander Mike Zanoni read a letter announcing that the Pine Mountain Veterans Memorial Committee is planning to honor Korean War vets on Aug. 25.
Post 4581 plans to participate, but some questions were raised as to what Norvulet will be doing and at what time.
More details will be posted in the local media as the date nears, and members may be called to help.
Commander Zanoni also announced that the District 15 fall conference will be held in Bessemer on Sept. 8-9. He and former commander Mike Thompson intend to go.
Honorably discharged veterans or active duty personnel who served in a combat zone during a time of defined national conflict are welcome to join the Norvulet Post 4581 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
