IRON RIVER - Rum Rebellion Days will be held Wednesday, July 18 through Friday, July 20 in Iron River.

Events kick off on Wednesday with a production of the off-Broadway musical "Always Patsy Cline" at 7 p.m. at the Windsor Center.

Admission to the show is $15. Proceeds will support Camp Batawagama in Iron County.

"Always Patsy Cline" is based on Cline's friendship with a fan from Houston named Louise Seger, who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tonk in 1961 and continued corresponding with her until her death in a plane crash in 1963.

On Thursday, the Iron County Museum will host a wine and cheese event from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Please pre-register by contacting the museum at (906) 265-2617.

Friday activities start with Market Days from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the downtown area. There will be vendors, a pie sale, and old fashioned photos at the West Iron District Library.

Registration for the all-school reunion golf challenge takes place at noon at the Iron River County Club on Selden Road (M-189).

Two events start at 7 p.m.: the all-school reunion pizza party at the Iron River Country Club and the Rum Rebellion Revue, which will highlight mining and the Iron County Fair, at the Windsor Center.

Due to road construction, there will not be a Rum Rebellion parade this year.

The annual Rum Rebellion festival commemorates the original Rum Rebellion, which occurred in Iron River during the Prohibition era.

In February 1920, officers raided a wine-making operation at the Scalcucci family's grocery store in the Virgil Location without a search warrant. Since there was no warrant, Iron County attorney Martin McDonough refused to press charges.

Federal prohibition officer A.V. Dalrymple disagreed with McDonough's decision, declaring Iron River to be "in open rebellion against prohibition."

The case, which had gained national attention, was eventually settled in a compromise and resulted in the reaffirmation of due process in Iron County.
