IM’s Junior softball nips Norway

ESCANABA - The Escanaba Junior Little League girls softball team coasted to an opening tournament victory Friday, drubbing Kingsford 13-1.

Escanaba, which scored six runs in the first inning at Lemerand Field, will face Iron Mountain North at 1 p.m. (Central time) today. IM North edged Norway 8-6 in Friday's opener.

Norway plays Kingsford at 11 a.m. today in the opener. The tourney is scheduled to end Sunday, with games at 1 and 3.

Escanaba allowed just three hits.

In the opener, IM North scored five runs in the fifth inning with the help of three errors and two walks. IM North had four hits for the game.

Denae Brock and Jade Driscoll split pitching duties for IM North. Brock left in the fourth inning after taking a line drive to the cheek. She was taken to OSF St. Francis Hospital for a checkup but a report was made in the nightcap that she was fine.

Norway's Barbie Slagle pitched a solid game, giving up four hits and striking out seven.

Norway took a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice bunt by Sydney Smaniotti scoring Jordan Kraemer. Norway led 4-3 before Iron Mountain scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on two walks, two hits and two errors.
