IRON MOUNTAIN - In the midst of the hot summer season, staff at the Northern Lights YMCA remind kids and adults about the importance of practicing safety when in and around the water. The Y offers a variety of swim programs in the Dickinson County area, where swimmers can have fun while developing confidence, engaging in physical activity and learning safety skills that can save lives.
"The Northern Lights YMCA is committed to providing as many opportunities as possible for everyone to learn basic swimming skills and water safety practices," said Chris Cavalieri, aquatics coordinator. "We encourage kids and adults to have fun when in and around the water, but to always make safety their first priority."
Several types of swim lessons are being offered all summer long at th Northern Lights YMCA. Lessons include parent-child, preschool, and progressive youth lessons from beginners to advanced swimmers. They teach a variety of skills using games, water toys, drills, and even songs.
"We offer youth lessons in two basic formats: daily two-week courses that meet at 10:15 a.m. and five-week courses that meet on Mondays and Wednesdays, 5:45 p.m. The YMCA staff is always striving to meet the scheduling needs of as many people as we can. We want everyone in the community to be able to get exercise and enjoy themselves at our facility," Cavalieri said.
The "Y" also offers private lessons by appointment, an Ultimate Aqua Fit class, and Aqua Zumba. Visit the YMCA to find out more about the aquatics programs, or call 774-4076.
